Winchester, treaty of, 1153. For many years this agreement between Stephen and his rival Matilda's son Henry was known as the treaty of Wallingford. In fact, the negotiations were at Winchester and were ratified at Westminster. The death of Stephen's son Eustace, in his twenties, had broken the back of Stephen's cause, and on 6 November 1153 he agreed to recognize Henry as his heir. Stephen died the following year and the prince succeeded as Henry II.
