The 4th degree of the major scale, according to the system of vocal syllables derived from Guido d'Arezzo, and so used (spelt fah) in Tonic Sol-fa (also in that system the 6th degree of the minor scale; see tonic sol-fa). In many countries, however, the name has become attached to the note F, in whatever key this may occur.
