Fountain of Youth
Fountain of Youth a mythical fountain which according to legend had the power of renewing youth; it was said in the 12th-century French work Roman d'Alisandre to have been a sidestream of the Euphrates in which Alexander the Great and his army bathed, and were restored to the prime of life.
The belief in the existence of such a fountain was widespread in the Middle Ages. After the discovery of America it was said to be in the Bahamas, and the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, discoverer of Florida, was authorized in 1512 to look for and settle Bimini, the island where the Fountain of Youth was said to be.
