Kentigern, St (d. 612), monk and bishop, evangelist of Strathclyde and Cumbria, and associated particularly with Glasgow; he is said to have been the illegitimate grandson of a British prince, and is also known by his pet name of Mungo. His later legends include the story that when the queen was told by her husband to find within three days a ring which he had thrown out to sea, he comforted her by telling her that the ring had been returned in a salmon caught by one of his monks; from this, a ring and a fish appear on the arms of the city of Glasgow. His feast day is 13 January.
