Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres
Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres
Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres (INMUJERES; National Institute for Women) was formed in Mexico in March 8, 2001, in conjunction with the Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos (CNDH; National Commission of Human Rights) to prevent violations of the human rights of women. It is a public institution independent from the federal government. The institute's primary goal is to create and develop a culture of equality, nondiscrimination, and nonviolence and to help women exercise their rights.
The institute paired with the Mexican government, private organizations, academic institutions, and civic associations to establish Foros Nacionales de Consulta (National Forums of Consultation) to create the Programa Nacional de Igualdad de Oportunidades y no Discriminación contra las Mujeres (PROEQUIDAD; National Program for the Equality of Opportunity and Nondiscrimination against Women). The primary goal of PROEQUIDAD is to promote social conscience and gender equality among men and women. INMUJERES works with Coordinación de Relaciones Públicas y Comunicación Social (Coordination of Public Relations and Social Communication) through campaigns, publications, press conferences, newspapers, and events to promote the institution's goals, objectives, image, and principles of equality. Other Latin American countries have created similar institutions to protect and promote women's rights, such as the Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres (INAMU) in Costa Rica, the Instituto Nacional de la Mujer(INAM) in Honduras, Instituto Nacional de la Mujer (INAMUJER) in Venezuela, and Instituto Nicaragüense de la Mujer (INIM).
