Poblete Poblete de Espinoza, Olga (1908–)

Olga Poblete Poblete de Espinoza (b. 21 May 1908), Chilean women's rights and peace activist and historian. Poblete received her degree in history, geography, and civic education from the Instituto Pedagógico de la Universidad de Chile in 1929 and held the chair in contemporary history at the Universidad de Chile in 1952–1970. She was active in national and international summer school programs, including the one at Columbia Teachers College, New York, in 1945. Poblete traveled widely on behalf of her work in the international peace movement, cofounded the Movimiento Chileno de Partidarios de la Paz (1949), served as Latin American representative to the World Council of Peace from 1960 to 1966, and was president of the Chilean Peace Committee until 1973. In 1962 she received the Lenin Peace Prize and in 1988 was awarded the Eugenie Cotton Medal from the International Democratic Federation of Women. A member of the Movimiento Pro-Emancipación de la Mujer Chilena (MEMCH), Poblete took over leadership of that organization in 1947. In the early 1980s she joined the efforts of MEMCH83 to coordinate protest against the Pinochet regime.
