Prieto Rodríguez, Sotero (1884–1935)
Sotero Prieto Rodríguez (b. 25 December 1884; d. 22 May 1935), Mexican mathematician and scientist. Son of engineer Raúl Prieto and nephew of writer Isabel Prieto, Sotero Prieto came from a prominent intellectual family in Guadalajara, Jalisco, where he completed his primary and secondary studies. He graduated from the National School of Engineering with a specialty in mathematics, and in 1912 began teaching mathematics and geometry at the National University, where many future political and intellectual leaders were his students. He founded and directed the mathematics section of the Antonio Alzate Science Society from 1932 to 1935, and contributed significantly to the expansion of science in general in Mexico. He also influenced the progress of mathematics research in Mexico, and is remembered for his expertise in the Spanish language.
