Tarata (Calle Tarata)

On July 16, 1992, a car bomb exploded on Calle Tarata, a residential street in the upscale Miraflores district of Lima, killing twenty-five civilians and wounding 155 others. The assault was part of a campaign by the radical insurgent movement Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) to gain control over Lima, the center of economic and political power in Peru. The Tarata bombing became a powerful symbol of Shining Path's use of terrorist methods, and galvanized support among many Lima residents for hard-line measures against the insurgency.
