Icelandic Official language of Iceland, spoken by virtually all of the island's 282,849 inhabitants. It belongs to the Germanic family of Indo-European languages. It is descended from Old Norse, which was taken to Iceland by Norwegian Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries ad.
