Icelidae (sculpin; subclass Actinopterygii, order Scorpaeniformes) A small family of marine fish that have a broad head, narrow tail, large eyes placed on top of the head, and wide mouth in line with the flat belly. Closely related to the true sculpins (Cottidae) and often placed with them, the icelid sculpins are sluggish, bottom-dwelling fish preferring a cold-water habitat. Icelinus filamentosus (threadfin sculpin), 27 cm, is one of the larger species of the N. Pacific. There are about ten species, found in the N. Atlantic and Pacific.
