Edge Waters
Edge Waters
Usually the shallow’s edge waters with little cover appear to be devoid of fish. These areas can become feeding lies because hatched insects tend to collect in these slack currents. Here the stillborn and spent spinners concentrate; as a result, these insects can be easily caught by foraging fish.
Although fish in edge water areas are watchful for predators, they are only found here when the food supply is ample. An errant cast or a noisy approach can cause these fish to streak for cover. A trout hooked here can panic and its first run can be exciting. Look for edge water fish during times of abundant insect emergence. Both the winter midge hatches and the late summer small mayfly activities make edge waters good feeding lies.
