Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel (kăm´ərən, lŏkh-ēl´), 1629–1719, chief of the Scottish highland clan of Cameron after 1647. On behalf of Charles II he led his clan in an uprising against the Commonwealth in 1653, and only in 1658 did he submit to the Puritan general George Monck. He accompanied Monck to London in 1660 and was received at the court of the restored Charles II. He was knighted in 1681. A supporter of James II, he took part in the Jacobite victory over the forces of William III at Killiecrankie in 1689 and sent his clan to aid the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Lochiel was a romantic warrior of great strength, and from one of his feats Sir Walter Scott drew his description of the fight between Roderick Dhu and Fitz James in The Lady of the Lake.
