Fort Lauderdale City on the Atlantic coast of se Florida, USA; seat of Broward county. It was established as a military post in 1838 by Major William Lauderdale during the wars with the Seminole. There are more than 435km (270mi) of waterways. Port Everglades is one of the world's largest passenger ports. Today, Fort Lauderdale is a popular holiday resort. Industries: tourism, computing. Pop.
