GORHAM, NATHANIEL (1738–1796)

Nathaniel Gorham, a prominent businessman and political leader, signed the Constitution as a representative of Massachusetts. One of the handful of most active delegates to the constitutional convention of 1787, Gorham presided over the Committee of the Whole, served on several committees, including the Committee on Detail, and spoke frequently. He was a supporter of strong national government.
