Guéret (gārā´), town (1990 pop. 15,718), capital of Creuse dept., central France. It is a market center and an industrial town. Metals (especially aluminum), shirts, jewelry, and handicrafts are the principal manufactures. In the 13th cent. Guéret became the capital of the county of Marche. Points of interest include the Hotel de Moneyroux (15th–16th cent.), which is now an archive, and the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (13th and 16th cent.), which was reconstructed in the 19th cent.
