Aleksey Nikolayevich Kuropatkin (əlyĬksyā´ nyĬkəlī´əvĬch kōōrŭpät´kĬn), 1848–1925, Russian general. He distinguished himself in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. Made minister of war in 1898, he opposed the course that precipitated the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5, but after its outbreak he took command of the troops in Manchuria. Kuropatkin resigned after the Russian defeat at Shenyang. During World War I he was (1916–17) governor of Turkistan.
