I Macchiaioli (ē mäk-kēīô´lē), a group of Italian artists active primarily in Florence c.1855–65. Influenced by members of the Barbizon school, the Macchiaioli reacted against stilted academic art and worked to emphasize painterly immediacy and freshness. Silvestro Lega, Giovanni Fattori, Vito d'Ancona, Giovanni (Nino) Costa, and Giovanni Boldini were among the artists of this school. They were best known for their landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes.
