Étienne Parent (ātyĕn´ päräN´), 1801–74, French Canadian journalist and government official, b. Quebec prov. As editor of the Canadien he had a commanding position in French Canadian journalism and inspired many French Canadian writers. Parent took no active part in the rebellion of 1837, but he was briefly imprisoned for his attacks on the government. After the union of Upper and Lower Canada he was elected to the assembly. From 1847 to 1867 he was assistant secretary of Lower Canada and in 1867 he was acting assistant secretary of state for Canada.
