wirehaired pointing griffon, breed of medium-sized sporting dog developed in Holland and France in the late 19th cent. It stands about 22 in. (56 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs between 45 and 60 lb (20.4–27.2 kg). Its harsh, bristly coat may be steel gray, chestnut, or grayish white with chestnut splashes. The tail is docked. Although a slow hunter, the griffon is a strong swimmer and a good pointing retriever with an excellent sense of smell. See dog.
