ANSE, COUNCILS OF

A number of provincial councils held at the small town of Anse (Ansa, Asa) in the Diocese of Lyons.

In 994 the archbishops of Lyons, Vienne, and Tarantaise, meeting with many bishops and abbots, confirmed the possessions of the Abbey of cluny at the request of St. odilo, its abbot, and provided for canons in the church of Saint-Romain. Among other things, its nine disciplinary canons directed that consecrated hosts reserved in churches were to be renewed every Sunday, that only priests could and must take Viaticum to the sick, that there be no servile labor after three p.m. on Saturday.

In 1025 a council of prelates from the provinces of Lyons and Vienne heard the bishop of Mâcon protest against the archbishop of Vienne's having ordained monks at Cluny, an abbey located in the Diocese of Mâcon. Abbot Odilo exhibited a papal privilege exempting Cluny from diocesan authority, authorizing its abbot to choose any bishop to ordain his monks. Citing the ancient canons, notably canon four of the Council of chalcedon, which said that abbots and monks everywhere must be subject to their bishop, the council rejected any privilege to the contrary. Cluny's privilege was suspended, but restored when Odilo obtained a papal bull confirming it (Rome, 1027).

At a council in 1070, the bishop of Chalon-sur-Saône gave the cloister of Saint-Laurent to a monastery near Lyons.

In 1076 hugh of die, the papal vicar, held at Anse one of the several councils called to promote gregory vii's reforms, especially the prohibition of lay investitures.

In 1100 a council excommunicated those who broke their vow to go on the Crusade. The papal vicar, Hugh, now archbishop of Lyons, requested money for a trip to the Holy Land.

In 1112 the archbishop of Lyons, claiming primatial authority in France, tried unsuccessfully to convoke a national council concerning investitures. His authority was contested; a provincial synod, however, may have actually been held.

In 1300 the archbishop of Lyons held a synod in Anse designed to restore or modify ancient ordinances.
