DAMPIERRE-DE-L'AUBE
DAMPIERRE-DE-L'AUBE , locality in the Aube department, France, E. of Troyes. Situated a short distance from *Ramerupt, another medieval center of Jewish learning in *Champagne, Dampierre-de-l'Aube was the home of such eminent 12th- and 13th-century scholars as *Isaac b. Samuel the Elder (1120?–1185?), his son *Elhanan (martyred in 1184?), and *Isaac b. Abraham (d. c. 1209). The most important Jewish financier of Dampierre, Jacob, the son of Sanson Rufus, lent 450 livres to the Abbey of St. Loup in Troyes in 1220. Before 1224, the abbey also owed him two life annuities.
