PINS, JACOB

PINS, JACOB (1917–2005), Israeli printmaker, born at Hoxter, Germany. Pins immigrated to Palestine in 1936 and spent five years working on the land before he took up art and studied under the great woodcut artist Jakob Steinhardt. His stark, dramatic woodcuts often convey an atmosphere of war. In style they show the influence of the Japanese color print. Bold and simple in black and white with few or no halftones, they nevertheless express a sense of volume and a third dimension. One of his favorite subjects was the city of Jerusalem. He was also a major collector of Japanese artwork.
