Presentation, Sisters of Mary of the
PRESENTATION, SISTERS OF MARY OF THE
(SMP, Official Catholic Directory #2450) A community with papal approbation (1959) whose motherhouse is in Broons, Côtes-du-Nord, France. The congregation was founded in 1828 by Rev. Joachim Fleury for the purpose of engaging in teaching, nursing, and other works of charity. The suppressions and confiscations carried out by the anticlerical government in France in 1902 caused the sisters to seek new foundations in other parts of Europe and in North America. They came to the U.S. in 1903 and established their novitiate in Spring Valley, Ill. The U.S. provincialate is in Valley City, ND. In the U.S., the sisters are engaged in academic education, catechetics, hospitals, homecare ministries, parish ministries, and social outreach.
