ST. JOSEPH, CONGREGATION OF (TURIN)

Congregatio Sancti Joseph (CSJ, Official Catholic Directory #1150); a society of priests and brothers with definitive papal approval (1904), founded in Turin, Italy, in 1873 by Bl. Leonardo murialdo (18281900). The principal mission of the congregation is the education of youth, especially the poor. Members, known also as Giuseppini, take St. Joseph as their model. During the founder's lifetime the congregation spread through northern Italy. Later it expanded to Libya (1904), Brazil (1915), Ecuador (1922), Argentina and Chile (1935), the U.S. (1949), and Spain (1961). In the U.S., the congregation operates schools, centers for troubled youth and parishes. Members are engaged in teaching, counseling, retreat and spiritual direction, youth ministries and parish administration. The U.S. provincialate is in San Pedro, CA. The generalate is in Rome.
