WEIL, JOSEPH
WEIL, JOSEPH (1897–1977), U.S. electrical engineer. Born in Baltimore, Weil received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins in 1918 and his M.S. from Pittsburgh in 1926. Weil joined the faculty at the University of Florida in 1921, and was professor and head of the department of electrical engineering from 1931, and dean of the college of engineering, 1937–63. He was a consulting engineer to municipalities, industrial organizations, radio stations, and U.S. government agencies; he was closely involved in defense training courses, civilian pilot training, and manpower commissions. Weil was the first, and for many years the only, Jewish faculty member at the University of Florida.
