Calluna
Calluna (family Ericaceae) A monotypic genus (C. vulgaris) of low, evergreen shrubs that have tiny, adpressed, opposite leaves, and flowers borne in the axils of upper leaves. The flowers are tetramerous; the calyx is coloured like the corolla but is larger and more deeply lobed. There are 8 stamens. The fruit is a capsule. Calluna dominates large areas of heathland on acid soils in western Europe, forming the community known as a Callunetum. The genus is confined to Europe and Asia Minor.
