Capromyidae (coypus, hutias; order Rodentia, suborder Hystricomorpha) A family of arboreal, ground-dwelling, or semi-aquatic rodents whose short limbs are pentadactyl but with the first digit of the fore limb reduced. The claws on the other digits are strong and the digits are webbed in some semi-aquatic forms. The eyes and ears are small, the skull massive, the occipital ridges prominent. The cheek teeth are hypsodont. There are eight species in four genera: Capromys, Geocapromys, Plagiodontia, and Myocaster. They are native to the W. Indies and temperate S. America.
