composite species concept An attempt, by Dina Kornet, to define species cladistically and to formalize the concept in the fossil record. A species, in this definition, is a segment of a lineage in which a new character state becomes fixed, from the point where it arises (by cladogenesis) to the point where a new lineage (in which another character state becomes fixed) arises by cladogenesis.
