forceps Modified insect cerci which are found in the Dermaptera (earwigs), and the family Japygidae (order Diplura). In the earwigs they are used to grasp prey, and in offence and defence. They may also assist in the folding of the membranaceous hind wings beneath the short tegmina after flight.

forceps (for-seps) n. a pincer-like instrument designed to grasp an object so that it can be held firm or pulled. Specially designed forceps are used by surgeons and dentists in operations (see illustration).
