gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) An inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (principally the brain) that is capable of increasing the permeability of postsynaptic membranes (see inhibitory postsynaptic potential). GABA is synthesized by decarboxylation of the amino acid glutamate.
