(pl. same or -fishes) any of a number of long, slender fish with elongated beaklike jaws containing sharply pointed teeth, in particular: ∎  a North American freshwater fish (genus Lepisosteus, family Lepisosteidae). ∎  a common European marine fish (Belone belone, family Belonidae). Also called needlefish.
