Hiodontidae (mooneye; superorder Osteoglossomorpha, order Osteoglossiformes) A family comprising two species of freshwater, herring-like fish that have a single dorsal fin positioned behind the ventral fins. The eyes are large and the jaws bear small teeth (‘toothed herring’). The larger of the two species is Hiodon tergisus (mooneye), 38 cm. Both species are found only in the eastern half of Canada and the USA.
