k-value The ‘killing power’ of an environment, calculated as the number of individuals lost from a specified stage in the life cycle of a species and expressed logarithmically (k = log10ax − log10ax+1, where ax is the number of individuals at the start of the stage, time x, and ax+1 is the number at the end of the stage, time x + 1).
