Mycoplasmataceae
Mycoplasmataceae (order Mycoplasmatales, class Mollicutes) A family of Gram-negative, chemo-organotrophic bacteria which require the presence of sterols (see STEROIDS) for growth. Cells are pleomorphic, ranging from spherical to filamentous. Genera include Mycoplasma, of which there are many species; they are found as parasites and pathogens in a variety of mammals and birds. Some species can cause a type of pneumonia in humans and other animals.
