Nycteribiidae (order Diptera, suborder Cyclorrapha) Small family of highly modified flies, which are ectoparasites of bats. Adults have the head folded back, to rest in a groove on the thorax. The antennae are two-segmented, and have a terminal arista. They have a ctenidium on the front of the thorax. Wings are absent, and the legs are long and adapted for clinging. Larvae are produced in a mature state, and form puparia after falling from the host bat. There are more than 200 species, occurring most commonly in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
