Abraham Robinson

1918-1974

German-American mathematician who received his Ph.D. from London University in 1949. In 1933 his family immigrated to Palestine, where he studied mathematics with respected teachers such as Fraenkel and Levitzki. He studied at the Sorbonne in 1939 but was forced to flee when the Germans invaded France. He worked on aerodynamics during the remainder of World War II. He is known for his pioneering work in model theory, the metamathematics of algebraic systems, and non-standard analysis.
