Amy Johnson

1903-1941

English aviator who set flying records. In 1930 Johnson was the first female pilot to fly solo from England to Australia. The next year she flew from England to Moscow in one day. She also completed the first solo round trip between England and South Africa. Johnson and her husband, James Mollison, set a speed record flying from England to India. Johnson published one book, Sky Roads of the World (1939). She died while piloting a World War II transport aircraft.
