George Emil Palade
George Emil Palade
1912-
Romanian cell biologist who shared the 1974 Nobel Prize with Albert Claude and Christian R. de Duvé for their research on the fine microscopic structure and functions of the cells. Palade significantly improved Claude's methods of centrifugal fractionation and electron microscopy. By elucidating the modern map of the cell, Palade established the foundations of current cell biology. Palade provided a pioneering description of the mechanism of protein synthesis and the role of the subcellular particles known as ribosomes.
