Guy Henry Faget

1891-1947

American physician who discovered the first practical treatment for leprosy in 1941. While working at a hospital in Carville, Louisiana, that was home to many lepers, Faget found that a sulfone drug similar to that used to treat tuberculosis controlled leprosy and helped put the disease into remission. Faget, a specialist in tropical diseases, worked in Central America as an employee of the British government during World War I.
