Muhyi l'din al-Maghribi
Muhyi l'din al-Maghribi
1220-1283?
Arab astronomer and mathematician who calculated the approximate value for the sine of 1°. Born in Spain, al-Maghribi spent his most fruitful years working with al-Tusi at the observatory established by their patron, the Mongol conqueror Hulagu Khan, at the city of Maragheh in what is now Azerbaijan. There al-Maghribi made a number of observations on the Sun and on the mathematical means required to calculate solar eccentricity and apogee. His calculation of the value of the sine for 1° appears in his Treatise on the Calculation of Sines, and would prove the most accurate until the work of Qadi Zada.
