Pierre R. Deligne

1944-

Belgian mathematician who received his training and Ph.D. in both Belgium and France. He later served on the mathematics faculty at Princeton University at the Institute for Advanced Study. He is the recipient of the Fields Medal in 1978 for his work in algebraic geometry. His work has provided important insight into the relationship between algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. He also developed weight theory, a division of mathematics concerned with differential equations.
