Rudolph Albert von Kölliker

1817-1905

Swiss physiologist, anatomist, biologist, and zoologist who made landmark achievements through his use of the microscope. Kölliker is famous for his knowledge of histology, a branch of anatomy involving study of the minute structure of plant and animal tissues. His memoir on cephalopods (marine mollusks) became a classic in that field. He investigated and made clear what tissues composed arteries, muscles, skin, bone, and teeth. The fields of embryology and microbiology were furthered due to his work. He received England's highest honor, the Copley Medal, in 1897.
