Stanford Moore

1913-1982

American biochemist who received the 1972 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, along with William Stein and Christian Anfinsen, for his research on the structure of protein molecules. Moore and Stein developed an efficient way of analyzing each of the 20 common amino acids that make up proteins. Using a process called chromatography, they were able to determine the exact arrangements of all 124 amino acids in a molecule of ribonuclease, an enzyme important in biochemical reactions.
