Thomas K. Mattingly

1936-

American astronaut who piloted three missions. Mattingly, a 1958 Auburn University aerospace engineering graduate, became a Navy pilot then an astronaut. Mattingly was removed from the Apollo 13 crew because of measles exposure only to monitor the stricken flight from mission control. In 1972 Mattingly served as pilot of Apollo 16's command module. He later assisted space shuttle development and was commander of two shuttle missions carrying Department of Defense payloads. Mattingly has also been an administrator for both governmental and commercial aerospace interests.
