Beig, Maria (1920–)

West German novelist and poet. Born Oct 8, 1920, in Tettnang, West Germany.

Was a 62-year-old retired knitting teacher when she published 1st novel Rabenkrächzen (Raven's Croak, 1982), an unsparing portrait of country life; also published Hochzeitslose (trans. as Lost Weddings, 1983), Urgroßelternzeit (1985), Töchter und Söhne (1995) and Buntspechte (2002). Won Allemannischen Literature Prize (1983) and Literature Prize of the City of Stuttgart (1997).
