Gordon, Annie Elizabeth (1873–1951)

New Zealand religious leader and welfare worker. Born on July 20, 1873, at Timaru, New Zealand; died May 28, 1951, in Auckland, New Zealand; dau. of George Granville Sutherland Gordon (boatman) and Anna (Eglington) Gordon.

Joined Salvation Army (1896); performed several years of social work throughout Australia before being transferred to New Zealand (1908); appointed matron of women's rescue home and officer in charge of police court work in Christchurch (1908); was 1st Salvation Army officer in Auckland (1917); appointed Auckland's 1st woman probation officer (1921); was 1st woman recipient of Salvation Army's highest honor, Order of the Founder (1945).
