Worked as a lawyer at Brent Law Center in London; was legal officer for National Council for Civil Liberties (1978–82); representing Labour, elected to House of Commons for Camberwell and Peckham in a by-election (1982); was the 1st Labour frontbencher to take maternity leave; reelected (1987, 1992, 1997, 2001); became secretary of state for Social Security (1997); named solicitor general, Law Officers' Department (2001); wrote The Century Gap (1993).
