Philiberta of Savoy (c. 1498–1524)
Duchess of Nemours. Name variations: Philiberta de Medici; Philiberte of Savoy. Born around 1498; died in 1524; aunt of Francis I, king of France (r. 1515–1547); married Giuliano de Medici (1479–1516), duke of Nemours, in 1515; no children. Giuliano de Medici's son, the cardinal Ippolito (1511–1535), was illegitimate.
In early 1515, Giuliano de Medici visited the court of France and left with the charming 17-year-old Philiberta of Savoy, aunt of the French king Francis I, as his bride. Francis also conferred the title duke of Nemours on the well-liked Giuliano. But one year later, on March 17, Giuliano died, age 37, sincerely mourned by Philiberta and the Florentines. Philiberta also died young, at age 26, in 1524.
