English art critic, editor and librettist. Pronunciation: mih-VAHN-wih. Born Mary Myfanwy Evans, 1911, in London, England; died near Henley, England, Jan 18, 1997; attended St. Hugh's College, Oxford; m. John Piper (artist and set designer), 1937; children: 4.

Founded and edited Axis, an English review of abstract art (1935–37); was librettist for 3 of the operas of Benjamin Britten: The Turn of the Screw (1954), Owen Wingrave and Death in Venice.
