Russ, Joanna (1937–)
American science-fiction writer. Born Feb 22, 1937, in New York, NY; m. Albert Amateau, 1963 (div. 1967).
Worked as instructor, lecturer, and professor in speech and in English at several universities, including State University of New York at Binghampton, Cornell University, and University of Washington, Seattle; writings include Picnic on Paradise (1968), The Female Man (1975), We Who Are About To … (1977), On Strike Against God (1980), Magic Mommas, Trembling Sisters, Puritans and Perverts (1985), and Souls (1989); also wrote feminist nonfiction, including What Are We Fighting For?: Sex, Race, Class, and the Future of Feminism (1997); published short stories in anthologies and magazines. Received Nebula Award (1972, 1983), Hugo Award (1983) and Locus Award (1983).
